NEChog called "LIVE Right!" In a couple weeks, as part of this series, I'm going to be wrestling with the question, "How Does The Bible Define Death & Life?"
I know the whole "death" thing sort of a bummer topic, but it's also kind of an important one for us to consider--since ALL of us will experience it. So, today I just want to kind of pull back the curtain and let you see some of the bible passages I’m considering on this topic.
Today’s blog will focus on “How The Bible Defines Life & Death”… Tomorrow—I’ll get into how that definition impacts our experiences here, now and beyond. This might seem a little bit “dis-jointed” since it’s just my preliminary “study notes”… but I think you'll still discover some insight and encouragement from it… the passages are powerful!
HOW DOES THE BIBLE DEFINE DEATH & LIFE?
God is the author and the source of life.
Genesis 2:7 “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath (or spirit) of life, and the man became a living being (or soul).”
Psalm 36:9 “You are the giver of life. Your light lets us enjoy life."
Connection/Relationship/Union with God = Life. Autonomy/independence from God = Death…
Disobedience in the Garden broke the union Adam and Eve had with God and thus resulted in death—physical and spiritual.
Even if our heart is beating—we are “spiritually dead” if we are not walking in relationship with God.
Romans 5:12 "When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.”
Romans 3:23 “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.”
Romans 6:23 “…the wages of sin is death.” Again---this does not mean as soon as we disobey God our heart stops beating. It means—when we chose autonomy from God…doing it our way instead of trusting God (ala, Adam and Eve) – the result is SEPARATION from God, or spiritual death.
John 3:16 “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in (acknowledges “sin”, repents, surrenders to, trusts in and follows) him shall not perish (remain in a place of spiritual separation from God, or death) but have eternal (abundant, real) life (union/relationship with God).”
DEATH to autonomy (self) is KEY to new spiritual birth, or LIFE in Christ!
Romans 6:11 “…count yourselves dead to sin (living with YOU on the throne of your heart) but alive to God in Christ Jesus (with Christ on that throne).”
Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” “SELF” is dead… Autonomy from God is history… My life is ALL about being with… following… glorifying and knowing JESUS!
This is what Jesus meant in John 3:16 by “eternal life” – it’s union with Him.
This is what the ministry of “reconciliation” is all about…
2 Corinthians 5:17-19 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”
