Traditions, ministries, programs, pot-lucks, VBS, Small Groups, Boards, Budgets, By-Laws, Buildings, Pastors, etc... we could make a list a mile long of all the good & important "stuff" we DO/Participate in "at" church couldn't we? But NONE of those things ARE the church.
The Church is God's People--all who have received Christ as Savior and follow Him as Lord... or as I'm planning to say this week in my message, "The Church is you with a purpose."
And the Bible is pretty clear on what that purpose is: to love God and love people.
Matthew 22:37-39 "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
As followers of Christ around the world wake up each day--determined in their hearts to LOVE God with their lives--by the words we speak, actions we engage in and the attitudes we express---THE CHURCH functions as salt and light in a world that desperately needs it! There are reportedly 2.2 billion Christians in the world---that's a lot of salt and light! God is a great orchestra conductor. By His Spirit living within each of us--He directs our lives along "paths of righteousness for His names's sake" (Ps. 23:3); leading us into conversations, opportunities to bless, serve, help, encourage, pray for another, testify about His love in our lives, etc. As we individually follow Him--collectively we form a massiave symphony---playing God's tune in the world each day!
You may not feel like your individual life makes all that much impact---but don't let that lie linger in your mind. Take it captive and make it obedient to Christ (2 Cor. 10:5) -- and replace it with this thought: My life matters! The "notes" I play today make a difference--even if I don't always notice it. Just like every "part" of my human body matters and plays an important function--MY LIFE and daily choices are import and play an important part in God's plan. My lifestyle & witness matters! How I live impacts the "health" of Christ's body!
The church isn't a religious institution. It's God's people living with a purpose every day!
So, love God and love people today---boldly--in Jesus' name. And do so knowing that you're part of something massvie. You're part of God's 2.2 billion piece orchestra--and "every note" matters!
