How To Be Friends With God

Relationship with God is an awesome thing. It’s the greatest goal of life. Having a relationship with Jesus as Savior and Lord and knowing God as Father should be our top priority. When we know God we will know God’s will (at least the BIG Picture) and we will know God’s voice. In this video Pastor Brad Windlan shares thoughts from Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life, Day 12 “Developing Your Friendship With God.” Proverbs 3:32 God “…offers his friendship to the godly.” James 4:8 “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” You are as close to God as you chose to be. RELATIONSHIP IS RELEATIONSHIP whether it’s with a friend, your spouse, or in many respects—with God. Healthy Relationships Require Four Qualities 1. Honesty-- God doesn’t expect perfect, but he does require honesty. No one wants FAKE friends. We all long for REAL friends---God does too. The Book of Psalms is filled with expressions of genuine, honest relationship with God. People praise and thank God… pour out their complaints, fears and cries of frustration, fear and doubt to Him. In other words it raw and real. Healthy relationships require this kind of honesty. 2. Obedience and faith---- If you want a good relationship with anyone you have to trust them and vice versa. And you have to want to honor them. Every time we obey God in faith (especially when we don’t understand it) we GROW. Jesus said, “You are my friends if you do what I command.” (John 15:14) We are friends with God, but we are not equals with Him. 3. Value what God Values Friends values each other’s values Spiritual Growth is becoming like Jesus and learning to love what He loves, hate what He hates and value what He values. 4. Desire HIM We must be careful not to fall into the trap of desiring only what we can get from God. First and foremost our desire should simply to be to know and walk with God. The Apostle Paul wrote, “I want to KNOW Christ.” … not know ABOUT Him, but KNOW Him. I have been mentored from afar by Pastor Rick Warren since the mid-1990s when I was first ordained into the ministry. In 1997 I had the privilege of attending the Purpose Driven Church Conference held at Saddleback Church. Learning to replace self, with Jesus on the throne of your heart is the greatest thing you can do. It changes everything: your perspective on life, you eternal destiny, your relationship with God and with people, your source of joy, meaning, purpose, hope,, wisdom, courage, direction---EVERYTHING! I hope you will journey with me through all of these Life On Purpose videos as I share Rick’s thoughts through the lens of my life experiences. I truly believe you will be challenged, edified, encouraged and inspired to take steps toward a deep and more meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ as your King, your Lord and your Savior.
